Most visitors spend their first days on Waikiki Beach — and then wonder what else the island holds. Short answer: a lot. East Oahu packs Diamond Head, Hanauma Bay, and Makapu'u into one scenic stretch. The windward side opens up to Kailua, Lanikai, Byodo-In, and Kualoa. The North Shore is its own world of surf breaks, shrimp trucks, and waterfalls.

How long does it take to get to the North Shore from Waikiki?
About 60 minutes each way in normal traffic, longer at peak commute times. Plan a full day if you want Hale'iwa, beaches, and Waimea Valley without rushing.
What should I book in advance?
Hanauma Bay entry, Pearl Harbor programs, and popular Kualoa Ranch tours often require advance reservations. Diamond Head also needs a reservation for out-of-state visitors. Check current rules before you go.
Can I do East Oahu and the North Shore in one day?
It’s a stretch. East Oahu (Diamond Head → Hanauma → Makapu'u / Lanikai) is a satisfying half-to-full day on its own. The North Shore is better as its own full day so you’re not racing daylight.
